An al-Qaeda linked rebel group operating in Syria has declared Jihad against Hezbollah. Jabhat al-Nusra, which was recently designated a terrorist organization by the United States, declared in a video posted to the web that “all Sunni” warriors should “take up arms against Shiite infidels.”
The announcement comes as Hezbollah continues to voice support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Last week the UN confirmed that Hezbollah had sent fighters to Syria to aid the army as well as Iranian forces fighting rebels.
Jabhat al-Nusra has become known for its brutal and ruthless attacks inside Syria. In October it claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed 48 and injured 122 people in Aleppo.
The group boasts about 7,000 fighters, according to The Economist, and is the only battalion recognized in Syria by al-Qaeda. According to the US, it is an offshoot of the terrorist group’s Iraqi branch.
In a recent interview, the man who claims to head the military wing of Jabhat al-Nusra said “Our first goal is to get rid of Assad. Then we want a state where the Quran is the only source of law. Sharia is the right path for all humanity – all other laws make people unhappy.”
