We Jews are paranoid about our survival as a people; sometime even the term paranoid is too weak. But can anyone seriously blame us for being acutely touchy on this subject? For centuries, we were persecuted for no other reason than being Jewish.
With the creation of the state of Israel 65 years ago, our people finally found a reason to believe that a Jewish homeland would change the nature of our existence as a people among the nations. And in all honesty, Israel has been one of the greatest miracles of history. The immeasurable success of this small nation in the past six decades has been a source of pride and admiration.
Today, Israel is being challenged by incredibly evil forces encircling this haven of ingenuity and innovation.
Israel is dependent more than ever for its survival on the only super power democracy that is the United States of America and its people.
The emotional attachment between the Jewish nation and its powerful ally is now a legendary tale of friendship unique in the world.
It is my conviction that the nomination of the new secretary of defense will be an opportunity for the American people to display their deep respect, admiration and love of the small Jewish nation and its people. Jews, more than anyone, wait with apprehension to witness the confirmation hearing of Senator Hagel and to objectively and calmly judge his positions. The close security ties between the U.S. and Israel are not only in the domain of the president and the secretary of defense but are the wishes of millions of dedicated people who have found a common goal, the security of two of the most incredible democracies of the 21th century.
In what will certainly be a very interesting confirmation. Senator Hagel will have the opportunity to come to understand and verify that the Senate and Congress see Israel as a beacon of hope surrounded by a sea of danger.
I trust the wisdom of America’s democratic institutions in realizing the benefit of continuing to support the Jewish Nation through what will be a very difficult few years to come.
