The Simon Wiesenthal Center has called on the Obama Administration to make the consignment of F-16’s and other military hardware it has pledged to deliver to Egypt conditional on President Mohamed Morsi’s renunciation of the vicious antisemitism he publicly articulated in 2010.
“America must not signal that it will be business as usual with the government of the Arab world’s largest and most powerful nation, while they continue to characterize Jews as descendants of apes and pigs, war mongers, and threaten anti-Semitic Jihads,” charged Rabbis Marvin Hier and Abraham Cooper, Founder and Dean and associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
At a White House Press briefing Tuesday, Press Secretary Jay Carney condemned Morsi’s remarks, but praised his actions as president, saying “Since taking office President Morsi has reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to its peace treaty with Israel in both word and deed, and has proven willing to work with us towards shared objectives including a ceasefire during the crisis in Gaza last year. These commitments are essential to our bi-lateral relations with Egypt as well as for stability in the region.”
Simon Wiesenthal Center officials criticized the Obama administration’s record in the Middle East, saying, “On the one hand it is apparently willing to reward an unrepentantly antisemitic government in Cairo, while at the same time it continues to refuse to use its clout to force Israel’s admission to the global anti-terrorism forum the U.S. itself launched in 2011.”
