Arnold Schwarzenegger, the famed actor and former governor of California, has authorized the Simon Wiesenthal Center to “take whatever steps necessary to immediately remove [his name]” from a display of historical figures and celebrities in a Turkish mall, because it prominently depicts Adolph Hitler, according to a Wiesenthal Center press release.
The poster, titled “Who Would You Like to Meet if You Could?” hangs at the Sapphire Mall, an upscale mall in Istanbul. It includes a list of historical figures such as Suleiman, Ataturk, and Lenin as well as celebrities including Schwarzenegger, the Beatles and Michael Jackson. But the most prominent name on the poster is Adolf Hitler. He is also the only figure depicted.
Schwarzenegger wrote that “as someone who despises everything that Hitler stood for, it is repugnant to me to have my name in any way associated with history’s greatest criminal, responsible for the murder of more than six million Jews, along with millions of other victims.”
Earlier in the week, Wiesenthal Center officials protested the Hitler display to the Turkish ambassador in Washington, D.C. and to Turkish officials in Ankara, urging that it be removed.
