George Galloway, the controversial UK MP known for his pro-Hamas and Islamic stances, walked out of a debate with an Israeli student Wednesday at Oxford University. After hearing Eylon Aslan-Levy use the pronoun “we” in reference to Israel, Galloway asked Aslan-Levy “You said ‘we,’ are you an Israeli?”
When Aslan-Levy answered in the affirmative, Galloway said “I don’t debate with Israelis, I’ve been misled. Sorry. I don’t recognize Israel and I don’t debate with Israelis.” He stormed out of the room, to cries of “racism.” Aslan-Levy later posted a video of the incident to his Facebook page, and Galloway later tweeted in defense of his actions, saying, “No recognition of Israel. No normalisation. Christ Church never informed us the debate would be with an Israeli.”
In recent years, Galloway has attracted attention for his support of Hamas. After being expelled from the Labor party in 2003, Galloway founded the Respect party. In 2009, Galloway participated in a convoy to the Gaza Strip, where he presented Hamas leaders with bags of hard currency. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh presented Galloway with an honorary Palestinian passport in recognition of his support.
