An exhibition in Berlin devoted to educating about Adolf Hitler has been welcomed by the country’s Jewish community, despite fears it would be perceived as offensive. The display at the German Historical Museum deals with Hitler’s fascination for the ‘Volk,’ or ‘people,’ which refers to the ordinary citizens. Stephan Kramer, secretary general of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, said the presentation was “dealing seriously with the issue, and I don’t think there is a danger of any form of glorification.” Its contents include items of propaganda, such as posters and artefacts. Hans-Ulrich Thamer, the curator, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency he hoped to “explain these historical events so people know the dangers caused by irrational mass movements.” A recent study by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation showed that ten per cent of Germans want a Führer, or dictatorial leader, to run the country with an “iron fist.”
