The southern German state of Bavaria says it needs more evidence before a Dutchman convicted of killing 22 Jews in the Holocaust can serve his sentence in Germany. A European arrest warrant has been issued for Klaas Carel Faber, who escaped from a prison in the Netherlands nearly 60 years ago and lives in Bavaria. German Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger called on the state, which has jurisdiction on the case, to “look for an alternative solution” following three failed attempts to bring Faber to justice. One option, suggested by Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, is to imprison him in Germany. The Haarlem-born SS member was originally sentenced to death before this was reduced to life imprisonment. He has lived in Germany since his escape from a Dutch jail in 1952 and ranks number three on the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s list of wanted Nazis.
