The UK Foreign Office is refusing to release documents that could provide information on the fate of three Israeli soldiers missing for almost 30 years. Three IDF soldiers went missing in June 1982 during the Battle of Sultan Yacoub with Syrian and Palestinian forces near the border between Lebanon and Syria, at the end of the Lebanon War. Zachary Baumel, Yehuda Katz and Zvi Feldman are all still officially Missing in Action. Ivor Lucas, Britain’s ambassador to Syria at the time, may have witnessed the capture and filed a report on the day it happened. The British government has repeatedly refused to release the relevant documents, claiming that it could harm diplomatic relations with Syria. A legal team in Manchester, northern England, is taken action on behalf of Zachary Baumel’s mother, Miriam, claiming that the government should release the files on grounds of public interest and that the threat to diplomatic relations is “nonsense.”
