Iran 180 and UANI (United Against Nuclear Iran) representatives stood together to protest the continuing business relationship between Italian auto-giant Fiat and the Iranian regime.  The demonstration’s stated mission was to tell Fiat: “If you want to do business in America, Stop doing business with Iran’s regime.”

As visitors to the International Auto Show at the Jacob Javits Center passed by, demonstrators warned of Fiat’s significant business dealings with Iran, where the Italian auto giant is “producing vehicles and supplying construction equipment (including) trucks manufactured by Fiat’s subsidiary company, IVECO.” Wall Street Journal reports state these heavy vehicles are used to ‘transport missiles and stage public executions. ”

In 2009, Fiat acquired a controlling stake in the Chrysler Corporation, which received a $500 million bailout loan from the United States government.  Fiat is also the recipient of over $246 million in U.S. government contracts placed since 2000.

According to statements, the Italian company has sought to direct Chrysler in the manufacture of smaller, greener vehicles. To take over the majority position, it must refinance billions of dollars of US and Canadian government debt by June, and pay back government money before taking ownership.  Fiat is said to be “banking on a Chrysler comeback.”

Attempts by the Algemeiner to secure a statement from representatives of Fiat and Chrystler were rebuffed.
