Senior owner of the New York Mets, Fred Wilpon, spoke out quite unsympathetically last week in an interview with the New Yorker Magazine on issues concerning his team’s struggles of late, namely the lack of performance and under achievement of some star players over the last few years. A Club that has been struggling to win on a consistent basis the Mets will not be looking to extend hefty resigning deals to some of their key franchise players whose contracts expire at the end of the 2011 season.
Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran an impending free agent, who signed up with the Mets back in 2005 to a seven year 119 million dollar deal was singled out as an overpaid underachiever said by Wilpon to have only performed at “65 to 70 percent of what he was” when they signed him.
Jose Reyes a fan favorite who has been red hot of late also has a contract due to expire at the end of the season, and has been the topic of trade rumors since the season began back in April. “He thinks he’s going to get Carl Crawford money from another team (7 year 142 million dollar contract given by the Red Sox to the former Tampa Bay Rays outfielder) he won’t get it” said Wilpon.
David Wright said to be the “face” of the franchise, also took a shot from Wilpon who said that “he is a really good kid and a very good player but he is NOT a superstar.”
Much of the controversy surrounding the team of late is due in large part to Wilpon’s involvement in the Madoff ponzi- scheme Scandal, which left the Mets with huge financial losses, which contributed to their head office’s desire to stay away from big contracts, and which prompted the Wilpon’s to announce their plans earlier this year to sell off part of the team. However the Mets performance on the field in the coming weeks will ultimately influence the decisions made in the future.
