Washington Times – House Republicans do not have enough support to pass Speaker Boehner’s debt-ceiling increase plan on their own, as conservative Republicans many allied to the tea party movement, won’t vote for the amendment. Their preference is that the Senate vote on the bill the House passed last week, which included deeper spending cuts, a balanced budget amendment and submit it to States for ratification before any debt increase is approved.
This means that House Speaker John A. Boehner will have to rely on Democrats to pass the $1.2 trillion spending cuts plan — supporting Democrats’ top vote-counter said he’ll be hard-pressed to gain. Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer said “very few” Democrats will vote for the Boehner plan, though he acknowledged there could be some.
