A spokesperson for the IDF has confirmed a direct hit against Ismail Zadi Ismail Asmar, known to be involved in smuggling weapons and the execution of terrorist activity in Sinai. A joint IDF- Israel Security Agency action targeted the Islamic Jihad-affiliated militant.
Asmar, 37, was born in Rafah. According to the IDF, he “operated with terror elements in the Gaza strip which have recently made several attempts to execute terror attacks in Sinai, on the Israel-Egypt border.”
Reflecting the statements of PM Netanyahu, the IDF spokesperson said Israel “will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers and will continue to operate with strength and determination against any element which uses terror against the State of Israel.”
At this time, the Algemeiner is unable to confirm whether Asmar had a direct involvement with an extremist Muslim organization known as Jaish al Islam, which may have played a role in the recent Eilat area attacks. The group is though to have ties to a Sinai-based al Qaeda group
