Just Pick Me Up at the Airport!

One of the greatest Jewish organizations in the world is Chabad-Lubavitch, and I think in many ways it’s because of Chabad’s “Just Do It!” attitude, which is something I often remember in my everyday life. I own one of the 25 largest PR firms in the U.S., I just authored a PR book and have family and communal responsibilities. It’s a lot, and I often need to just focus on tackling my “to-do” list.
“We will do” is actually a lesson from the Torah, as the Jews proclaimed at Mt. Sinai, “We will do!” Only then did they follow with, “We will listen!”
Rabbi Avi Weiss tells a great story to illustrate this perfectly. He remembers how he always picked up his parents when they returned to N.Y. from out-of-town. He adds, “It was my responsibility to meet them at the airport. One time, my father called to inform me that at the last moment their arrival was moved up by 24 hours. Professing my deep love for my parents, I insisted that I couldn’t change my schedule on such short notice.”
“”You became a hotshot rabbi,” my father responded, “and don’t have time for your parents?” “I love you deeply,” I protested, “but it’s difficult to alter plans at the last moment.” I’ll never forget my father’s response. “Don’t love me so much – just pick me up at the airport!””
It’s a fundamental tenet of Judaism and of life – just do it, and good things will happen.
