The Jewish People and Haiti

by Yosef Abramowitz
I am aboard an American Airlines flight, leaving the glitter of Miami for the devastation of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Bill Clinton and the World Bank have called an invitation-only conference to promote investment in Haiti. This is not the first time conferences have been called, detailing plans on how to spend the billions promised – but not delivered – to the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. But this is the first one since a new government has finally been formed, and it is the first time I am going.
I serve as President of the Arava Power Company, Israel’s leading solar developer. I am going, however, primarily as a Jew. I am traveling to Haiti because the Jewish people have learned a little something about reconstruction, over thousands of years, and so perhaps we can be helpful. At least in representing hope, and in bringing renewable and clean energy to the people and government of Haiti… Instead of those vultures from the diesel companies, who should be rendered to the dust bin of history, like the Babylonians and Romans before them.
Yosef Abramowitz, a human rights activist, environmentalist, educator, investor and entrepreneur, is the Co-Founder and President of Arava Power Company and is considered, along with David Rosenblatt and Kibbutz Ketura, to be the founding father of Israel’s solar industry. Yosef was named by The Jerusalem Post in 2011 as the 26th most influential Jewish person on the planet.
