Following meetings with Egyptian government officials in Cairo, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter shed light on his views of the short term future of Egypt’s political landscape and the longer term stance of Egypt’s focus on the ‘Palestinian cause.’
“When I talked with the Muslim Brotherhood and others, they contemplate a period extended beyond the end of June where the military might have some special privileges,” Carter told Reuters.
Carter added his own personal feelings on the transition as well.
“But they should be terminated at the end of a certain period, and the permanent limits on the military should be clearly expressed in a constitution to be written in the next two or three months.”
Referring to Egypt’s stance towards the Palestinians, Carter believes future Egyptian governments will be “more concerned” then previous ones, with ‘Palestinian rights’. The 39th President of the United States added that such a landscape would be “conducive to a better prospect for peace.”
Carter is in Egypt to help monitor the third round of parliamentary elections, along with representatives of his human rights group, The Carter Center.
