Israel Hayom – One day after Russia and China vetoed a U.N. Security Council vote to take action to stop the escalating violence in Syria, Hezbollah vowed Sunday to protect the Assad regime, even if doing so meant engaging in another war with Israel. The double-veto outraged the U.S. and European council members who feared it would embolden Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his regime.
A Friday night onslaught on neighborhoods in Homs, Syria’s third largest city, signaled a willingness by Assad’s regime to use unprecedented violence to stamp out its opponents. Activists say Syrian forces killed between 200 and 350 people in Homs, pounding residential areas with mortars and artillery. The timing of the assault, hours before the planned vote on the U.N. draft resolution, reflected Assad’s confidence in his ally Russia’s protection on the world stage.
