The Pentagon has confirmed that a US Marine scout sniper unit in Afghanistan posed for a photo in front of a flag showing the Nazi SS symbol. The picture with the SS symbol was taken in September 2010 in Sangin province, Afghanistan. The Marines were with the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion out of Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Marine Corps spokesman Capt Gregory Wolf said “certainly, the use of the ‘SS runes’ is not acceptable and Scout Snipers have been addressed concerning this issue.” The Marines in the photograph are no longer with the unit they were assigned to at the time.
The SS, or Schutzstaffel, was a major Nazi paramilitary organization. It was initially setup as Hitler’s bodyguard but grew in size during World War 2. Under the leadership of Heinrich Himmler, it committed some of the worst crimes in World War 2.
