Mont Vernon, New Hampshire no longer has their “Jew Pond”.
Following a vote by residents of the town on Tuesday night over whether to rename the pond, referred to for decades as “Jew Pond”, a request will be made to the U.S. Board of Geographic Names to change it’s official name.
“I don’t know if it was meant to be offensive or not, but if people are offended by the name I don’t see why we shouldn’t change it,” Bill Davidson, who lives in Mont Vernon, said on Tuesday.
Not everyone agreed with the name change, including Zoe Fimbel, a member of the town’s historical society.
“It’s too bad it’s gotten to be such an issue when it’s never even referred to or portrayed in a negative way. It’s more like, `It’s the Jew’s Pond. The new man in town.'”
