9,000 Nazis Fled to South America Following World War 2, New Files Show

German investigators have been given access to documents that show 9,000 European Nazi war criminals fled to South America following the Allied victory in World War II.
The majority of these criminals went to Argentina, after the country’s President Juan Peron sold 10,000 blank passports through an organization known as ODESSA – set up to aid German SS officers following the defeat of the Nazis.
Kurt Schrimm, head of the Central War Criminal Authority in Germany, and his colleague Uwe Steintz, have been in South America going through the newly released documents over the past three weeks, according to The Daily Mail.
“These documents provide the hottest leads we have had for years,” Scrimm said.
Scrimm says the likelihood of apprehending living war criminals is small, however.
“Each day that passes makes that less and less likely but I do not want people to say in the future that we did not try.”
In addition to the 5,000 war criminals who entered Argentina, 2,000 are now believed to have fled to Brazil, and another 1,000 to Chile.
“Already we see something of a pattern in the way these criminals operated. They almost always entered the country alone and sent for their families afterwards,” Scrimm said.
