The president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, was accused by the Anti-Defamation League of “provoking Anti-Semitism” in the country by attacking his main opposition candidate Enrique Capriles Radonski for his Jewish origin. The organization sent a statement to the Jewish News Agency detailing the various “classic anti-Semitic” remarks that Chavez used to discredit Capriles.
The League has kept track of the “anti-Semitic tone emanating from the government of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.” since 2006. The report of the organization focused on Chavez’s presidential campaign for 2012, which according to the ADL was considered “very disturbing “.
However, the ADL said that “anti-Semitic attacks directed toward Capriles by Chavistas are not a new phenomenon but dating back to 2008 when he ran for governor of Miranda State.”
“However, the stakes are higher now, given his higher profile as a candidate in the crucial 2012 presidential elections,” the ADL wrote.
Radonski has been accused of being “disloyal” to his country and belonging to “an international conspiracy Zionist controlled media and global finance,” the ADL summarizes .
