18 years after Rashid Baz opened fire on a group of Jewish students riding along the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, the killer’s confession that he shot at the students because of their religion has been made public by the New York Post.
Ari Halberstam, who was 16 years old at the time, was killed in the attack.
According to the information obtained by The Post, Baz admitted to following the van full of students for two miles, from the Manhattan Eye and Ear Infirmary on the city’s east side, over to the bridge.
When asked by investigators if he would have shot at a van with Latinos or African-Americans inside, Baz repsonded, “No, I only shot them because they were Jewish.”
The confession, which was given in 2007 according to The Post’s report, confirms what many in New York have believed to be true since the 1994 attack. In court, Baz claimed the incident was in response to a traffic dispute.
Baz, who was born in Lebanon, said he followed the van full of Jewish students in response to the 1994 attack on Muslims in the West Bank, in which 29 people were killed when Baruch Goldstein opened fire in the city of Hebron.
In 1995 the southbound ramp on the Brooklyn Bridge was renamed the “Ari Halberstam Ramp”.
