A new website, NameYourRoots.com, allows descendants of Jews who escaped the Spanish inquisition to rediscover their origin and family history.
Anyone with a Spanish or Portuguese last name can search the genealogy records. The process is especially significant for those who descend from Jews who were forced to convert.
Such people are commonly referred to as Marranos, Conversos, crypto-Jews, Chuetas, Anusim and New Christians, according to MarketWatch. These days, such people may have no knowledge of their family’s past.
