Former Syracuse basketball assistant coach Bernie Fine has landed a new job, with the Maccabi Bazan Haifa basketball team in Israel.
Fine, who had the longest running tenure of any Division I assistant coach in mens basketball, was fired last year amid allegations that he sexually molested two ball boys who had previously worked with the Syracuse team.
No charges have been filed and Fine denies the allegations. Syracuse’s head coach, Jim Boeheim, considered one of basketball’s best teachers and who will be in London this summer as an assistant coach with the United States mens team, called the allegations against his former assistant “a bunch of a thousand lies”.
Maccabi Bazan Haifa is scheduled to compete in two exhibition games against NBA teams later this year. The Israeli club is currently in last place among the 11 teams in Israel’s top division, following the loss of Sean Williams after the NBA lockout ended in December of 2011.
When Boeheim was asked if he regretted coming to the defense of Fine late last year, he stood by his position.
“I support Bernie. I’ve known him for 50 years, and if something else happens, something factual, we’ll have to adjust to that.”
