Delmon Young, the Detroit Tigers outfielder and the #1 overall pick in Major League Baseball’s 2003 draft is being charged with an aggravated hate crime, after allegedly shoving a man to the ground in midtown Manhattan and uttering “anti-semitic remarks”, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Young reportedly screamed “F–king Jews, f–king Jews” at a man asking for change outside the Hilton hotel on 6th avenue, who was wearing a yamulke. When a group of people approached Young after yelling at the man, an altercation ensued and Young pushed a man to the ground. After finding scratches on his body from the fight, the man called police.
According to reports, Young was taken to Roosevelt Hospital following the incident, in order to sober up, and was then arrested by New York City police.
The right handed slugger from Alabama is in New York with his teammates to begin a 3 game series against the Yankees on Friday. In 2006, Young was suspended by the International League for 50 games after he threw a bat at an umpire during a game against the Pawtucket Red Sox, while playing for the Durham Bulls.
