Following nearly 20 attempts to kidnap IDF soldiers in 2011, Israel’s security apparatus is being proactive in its drive to stop its soldiers from hitchhiking around the country.
Using the slogan “Don’t catch a hike, the hike might catch you”, the IDF is trying to stop their personnel from hitchhiking, citing the capture of Gilad Shalit as one of the reasons that Palestinian terrorists continue their attempts to kidnap Israeli soldiers.
“The goal is to raise the awareness of the soldiers and their families to change the way soldiers travel,” IDF Spokesman Brig.Gen. Yoav Mordechai said.
Israel’s internal security service, Shin Bet, arrested 10 members of the group Islamic Jihad in January, who were planning to kidnap IDF soldiers as part of a broader attack on the Jewish state. In April, information was released that showed one of the prisoners exchanged in order to release Shalit had passed information along to people living in the West Bank about how to kidnap Israeli soldiers as well.
“This is a real threat that needs to be taken more seriously,” an IDF officer told the Jerusalem Post.
