Daniella Rabbani has spent much of her time since graduating from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, becoming one of Yiddish theater’s rising stars with lead roles in two National Yiddish Theater Folksbeine performances, but recently, she landed a voice-over role in the new Barnes and Noble advertisement for the Nook tablet.
“I’ve booked a bunch of small things for Dunkin Donuts and Taco Bell. This was the biggest campaign though, there are 6 ads right now and it’s probably the one I’m most proud of,” she said in an interview with The Algemeiner.
“I auditioned for it, probably a week before I went into the studio to record 5 of the ads.”
Rabbani’s career in Yiddish theater began when she performed in a production of Shakespeare at Tisch. The director, Tom Oppenheim (the grandson of iconic actress Stella Adler), told Rabbani that she “must carry on the legacy”.
“The thing that keeps me doing Yiddish theater and the voice-overs (her dream is to do “a lot more in television”) is because I’ve always been Shomer Shabbat, and I want to raise a Jewish family and I also want to be doing what Hashem put me on this earth to do, to be an actress and a story teller,” she told The Algemeiner.
Recently, the actress and voice over artist has been involved in “Ghetto Tango”, a production that highlights songs and music that came out of the Holocaust.
“It’s more of a concert than a theater piece and it’s all this cabaret underground music that sprung up during the Holocaust,” she said. “It’s a testament to what human beings can create even in the darkest times.”
Now also working on a television script with a friend, Rabbani says she already has a Mother’s Day gift picked out for May 13th.
“I’m getting my mother and mother in-law a Nook.”
