TIME Magazine’s new cover features Israeli Prime Minsiter Benjamin Netanyahu, with the headline “King Bibi” next to the leader’s portrait.
“He’s conquered Israel. But will Netanyahu now make peace-or war?” reads the text at the bottom of the cover.
“Netanyahu is going to be the Israeli prime minister with the longest tenure since David Ben Gurion, Israel’s founding father,” writes Richard Stengel of TIME.
The featured piece examines whether or not Netanyahu will achieve peace with the Palestinians, something that has eluded the Jewish state since its inception in 1948.
“The question is whether he is a prisoner of her history or if he can write a new narrative,” Stengel writes.
The Israeli leader’s military service, sense of history, the death of his brother Yoni during the 1976 raid on Entebbe airport in Uganda, and his father Ben-Zion’s teachings are all examined as the driving forces behind Netanyahu’s policies.
“Like his father he sees Jewish history as a series of survivors after the Holocaust. Like his father , he holds an almost mystical belief in the power set of anti-Semitism, as if it is more cultural than biological,” writes Stengel.
Netanyahu also addressed his relationship with Mitt Romney, which dates back to their time together at Boston Consulting group years ago
“We did not know each other that well. He was the whiz kid. I was just in the back of the room,” the Israeli leader said.
