Hamas leaders and supporters in Gaza celebrated Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi’s victory in the Egyptian presidential election. According to Egyptian and Arabic news outlets, Hamas spokesperson Sami Abu Zohri said that the victory would help break the siege on Gaza and support the Palestinian cause.
‘We pin great hopes upon the Egyptian leadership, revolution, army, people and presidency to bolster the resistance of the Palestinian people, which has looked to Egypt throughout history,” Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said.
Recent activity—including violence near the security fence on the border with Egypt, the launching of rockets from Gaza into Israel over the last few days, and reports of terrorist activity in the Sinai Peninsula during the presidential voting period in Egypt—has sparked speculation that the new Egyptian government may destabilize the fragile peace that has existed between Egypt and Israel since the countries signed a treaty in 1979.
