A new dancing robot developed by Israeli engineers in the U.S. and Israel will be shimmying his way to San Francisco to be showcased in the prestigious Google I/O developers convention, taking place this coming Wednesday June 27th and running until Friday.
“He’s like your personal DJ, the guy that knows how to keep a party going and always knows what you want to hear next,” according to Shimi’s promotional website TovBot.
Shimi, the robot formerly known as Travis before his name became Hebrew, was created by Dr. Gil Weinberg from the Georgia Tech Center in Atlanta and Guy Hoffman from Media Innovation Lab at IDC Herzliya. According to the website AbbaNibi, Shimi is “a smart-phone enabled robotic musical companion” with an Android phone operating its built-in sensing and music generation facilities.
By plugging a smartphone into Shimi’s smartphone dock, TovBot promises that this robotic musical companion’s speakers will enable music to be enjoyed “in booming, crystal clear hi-def, and Shimi follows you to make sure you’re always getting the best sound.”
Another one of Shimi the robot’s applications is analyzing rhythms performed by humans, after which he selects tunes with beats and tempos resembling the original song from the phone’s music library. Then he jives to the music using a set of animated motions that match the tempo and genre.
Shimi can also teach its users how to play the guitar. Additionally, Shimi contains social media capabilities by notifying its users on incoming Facebook posts, Twitter tweets and followers, and broadcasting its dance mixers to the users friends all over the world.
Shimi is also expected to be released at the upcoming 2013 Consumer Electronics Show.
