The electricity at Israel’s Ministry of Finance building was shut off by the Israel Electric Corporation today, as demand for electrical power is expected to reach capacity.
“IEC has asked the public to conserve electricity, especially after 2 pm,” Globes reported. “It asked the public not to use power-hungry appliances, such as dishwashers, washing machines, ovens, and vacuum cleaners, between noon and 5 pm. It also asked the public to set air conditioners at 25 degrees.”
Rolling blackouts are expected throughout Israel today as temperatures approach 90 degrees. The Weather Channel reports that while temperatures are in the high 80’s and low 90’s (Fahrenheit) today near Tel Aviv, it feels like 101.
Reuters reported earlier this week that due to a loss of natural gas supplies from neighboring Egypt, and a low level of reserve capacity, Israel is being forced to ration its supply of electrical power. The report also notes that due to Israeli protests over the high cost of living, the state is hesitant to increase charges for energy consumption.
