England’s Football Association (FA) has charged a Ghana-born soccer player for inappropriate behavior after he posted a comment using a derogatory term for Jews on his Twitter page. Emmanuel Frimpong, 20, a midfielder for Arsenal Football Club based in London, had posted the offending tweet in a conversation with a Tottenham fan, a team known to have a significant number of Jewish supporters.

“Arsenal’s Emmanuel Frimpong has been charged under FA Rule E3 for improper conduct in relation to recent comments made on Twitter” said the FA in a statement. “The allegation is that Frimpong posted comments amounting to improper conduct and/or which brought the game into disrepute, which included a reference to ethnic origin, faith or race.”

Although Frimpong swiftly removed the comment, he did not appear to express remorse for saying it. “Just wanna say didn’t even no the word is offensive as u hear it all the time but u live and learn from ur mistakes have a gd afternoon,” he tweeted Tuesday morning.

A spokesman for Arsenal, nicknamed “the Gunners,” acknowledged the charge against Frimpong. “We are aware of the FA charge,” the he told the BBC. “Emmanuel has been reminded of his responsibilities when representing the club…Emmanuel will respond to the charge by 27 July as requested.”

Frimpong has until 4pm on Friday to reply to the FA’s charge.
