Morocco’s leading political party has apologized for inviting a Jewish man to a gathering of its leaders.
At a July congress meeting of Moroccan Islamist Justice and Development Party (PJD) leaders, the politburo chief of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal and Jewish activist, Ofer Bronchtein, were both invited to attend.
Morocco’s PJD held their 7th Congress in mid-July to deliberate on the party’s future, but for the first time in history, the gathering took place as PJD holds a majority in Morocco’s parliament, making them the country’s leading political group.
After the July conference, PJD supporters demanded an apology from the party for inviting Bronchtein, who founded the International Forum for Peace, located in Paris, due to his Jewish roots.
According to David Martosko at the Daily Caller, who first reported on this story, once Moroccan newspapers began to circulate a picture of Bronchtein with PJD leader and Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane, an “uproar” over Bronchtein’s attendance began.
The Jewish activist was an adviser to former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and according to Tunisian media, Bronchtein met with Hamas leader Meshaal during his time in Morocco.
