Following a letter that Israeli President Shimon Peres sent to Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, wishing him a good Ramadan, Morsi wrote back to Peres thanking him for the correspondence and noting Egypt’s interest in getting “the Middle East peace process back to its right track”.

“It was with deep thanks that I received your congratulations on the advent of the holy month of Ramadan,” Morsi wrote in a letter to the Israeli leader.

Egypt – the Arab world’s most populated country – is one of two nations in the region to have signed a peace treaty with Israel, and has been locked in a political struggle between the newly elected civilian government, led by the Muslim Brotherhood, and the Egyptian military. Israel, which shares a border with Egypt, has been watching their neighbor closely as Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood party attempts to maneuver through uncharted political waters, while Israel’s other neighbor, Syria, continues to engulf itself in a widespread conflict threatening to overthrow the government

“I take this opportunity to reiterate that I am looking forward to exerting our best efforts to get the Middle East peace process back to its right track in order to achieve security and stability for all peoples of the region, including the Israeli people,” Morsi finished his letter to Peres.
