The United States women’s gymnastics team won their first gold medal since 1996 on Tuesday, downing second place Russia in a display of dominance that backed up expectations for the U.S. team coming into the games after their world championship last year.
Team captain Aly Raisman, whose parents received considerable attention during their daughter’s performance at the Games earlier this week, capped off the U.S. squad’s title run with what the Boston Globe called “a thunderous floor routine”.
After the Massachusetts native’s score was posted, the arena erupted into chants of “U-S-A, U-S-A” while the team members each held up an index finger to remind the world who was number one.
