After winning two gold medals at the London Olympics, Aly Raisman has been invited to Israel, along with her family, by Diaspora Affairs Minister Yuli Edelstein, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Raisman, who performed her gold medal floor routine in London to the tune of “Hava Nagila” took it upon herself to invoke the memories of the slain Israeli athletes and coaches from the 1972 Munich Olympics, directly after becoming the first American woman to win gold in the floor exercise.
“Having that floor music wasn’t intentional,” she said, “but the fact it was on the 40th anniversary is special, and winning the gold today means a lot to me.”
In a personal letter written to the American-Jewish gymnast, Edelstein referenced the pride Raisman brought to Jews “around the world” during the Olympics.
“I am sure you know that beyond your wonderful personal achievement, you also brought great pride to millions of Jews in Israel and around the world,” he wrote.
Raisman’s parents and three siblings were invited to Israel, which would reportedly mark the family’s first visit to the Jewish state.
