While Bertha Presz was shopping at Brach’s Glatt Kosher Meat Market in Queens, a man went into her cart and stole her purse. Now, the Holocaust survivor who fled Belgium under Nazi control, is doing everything she can to track down the criminal, including pushing the NYPD to take the case more seriously.
After handing out flyers in Queens which showed photos of the suspect, Presz told the New York Daily News, “I wanted to check if anyone recognized him.”
Presz’s purse contained $150 in cash, bank cards, and a cell phone when it was stolen, but when she reported it to the police, they informed her the case would have to take a backseat to more serious crimes.
“They made us feel like idiots,” Presz’s daughter, Hindy Laster said. “The cop on duty said he understands it’s upsetting but that they were busy dealing with stabbings.”
After Presz and her family contacted a community activist in an attempt to get the police more involved, the NYPD found out the kosher meat market had surveillance cameras inside the store, and according the the New York Daily News, an “active investigation” is now ongoing.
