ADL Expresses Outrage and Horror Over Attack on Jewish Michigan State Student

Following a vicious attack on a Michigan State student on Sunday, in which two men beat a Jewish student unconscious before stapling his mouth shut, the Anti Defamation League has reached out to the victims family, and released a statement on Tuesday condemning the incident.
“We are horrified by this violent assault and allegations that the student may have been viciously attacked because he was Jewish,” said Betsy Kellman, ADL Detroit Regional Director. “We are confident that the East Lansing Police will thoroughly investigate this deeply troubling case and, given the allegations, treat it as a possible hate crime. We hope the perpetrators will be swiftly brought to justice.”
Zachary Tennen, a sophomore at Michigan State University, was approached by two men at a party early on Sunday and asked if he was Jewish, according to Tennen’s mother. The men proceeded to raise their right arms in a Nazi salute and said “Heil Hitler”, before beating Tennen unconscious. According to Tennen’s mother, 20 people watched while her son had his mouth stapled by the two suspects.
The ADL “has spoken to the parents of the victim, Zachary Tennen, a sophomore, and has been in contact with local law enforcement and university officials since first learning of the assault, which took place in the early morning hours of August 26 and reportedly was witnessed by other students,” according to a statement released by the group on Tuesday.
Michigan State has approximately 3,000 Jewish undergraduate students on campus, according to Hillel’s website.
