A message relayed from Washington to Jerusalem warns that if Israel decides to unilaterally strike Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, Jordan and Egypt will most likely nullify their peace treaties with Israel, according to a report in the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper.
“These days, Arab leaders don’t rule their people. Rather, the street rules its leaders,”an unnamed Israeli official told the Hebrew daily. “An Israeli strike is exactly what the Iranians need – the entire Arab and Muslim street will go out to demonstrate.”
Jordan and Egypt are the only two nations in the Middle East that share peace agreements with Israel, and the 33 year agreement between Egypt and the Jewish state is considered by many to be a linchpin of regional stability.
The Israeli official who spoke with Yedioth likened the recent reaction in parts of the Muslim world to the anti-Mohammad film that many claim sparked deadly attacks in Afghanistan, Libya, and Egypt, to the response that would follow an Israeli strike on Iran.
“What we’ve been seeing with the anti-Muhammad film is nothing but a preview for what’s going to happen if Israel attacks,” the official said.
