The official Twitter account for Israel’s Embassy in the United States had some fun with Iran’s state run Fars News Agency on Friday, after the Iranian outlet used a report by the satirical Onion publication stating that a new Gallup poll showed rural white Americans overwhelmingly prefer Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over President Obama, and passed it off as real.
The Onion ran a headline entitled, “Gallup Poll: Rural Whites Prefer Ahmadinejad to Obama”, and hours later Fars ran the identical story.
A fake West Virginia resident named Dale Swiderski was among the “77%” of rural white Americans who likes Ahmadinejad better than Obama, according to The Onion.
“He takes national security seriously, and he’d never let some gay protesters tell him how to run his country like Obama does,” said Swiderski.
The Israeli Embassy took to Twitter, writing “Dear Iran (@khamenei_ir): @TheOnion is not a reliable source for US opinion…”, the tweet then referred the Iranians to a real Gallup Poll which showed that 87% of Americans view Iran in an unfavorable manner.
