International Airport to be Built Near Israeli Tourist Hotspot Eilat

The Israel Airports Authority (IAA) has announced the first construction proposals for a new $1.7 billion international airport near the southern resort city of Eilat.
The airport will be built in Timna, approximately 18 kilometers (11.2 miles) outside of Eilat, and will replace an older domestic airport located within the city. Its construction will also coincide with an expansion of the Arava Highway and rail line linking the airport with Eilat, Israel Hayom reported.
“The publication of the first tenders is a historic day for the city of Eilat and the State of Israel,” Katz said. “This will enable, for the first time, an alternative international airport to be established, from which large jets will be able to take off to all destinations in Europe.”
The airport will be named Ramon International Airport in honor of Ilan Ramon, the Israeli astronaut killed in the 2003 Columbia Space Shuttle disaster, and his son Assaf, who was killed in a 2009 air force training accident.
