Four more years.
That’s what President Barack Obama earned the right to last night, defeating GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. In his speech to supporters afterwards he thanked the American people. “Tonight, in this election, you, the American people, reminded us that while our road has been hard, while our journey has been long, we have picked ourselves up, we have fought our way back, and we know in our hearts that for the United States of America the best is yet to come.”
He also urged Americans to continue to contribute to the nation’s political dialogue, saying, “The role of citizen in our democracy does not end with your vote. America’s never been about what can be done for us. It’s about what can be done by us together through the hard and frustrating, but necessary work of self-government.”
President Romney called President Obama to concede defeat earlier in the night and then spoke to his supporters, wishing President Obama well and saying, “I ran for office because I’m concerned for America,” adding, “Like so many of you, Paul and I have left everything on the field. We have given our all to this campaign.”
The final tally of electoral votes gave President Obama a comfortable victory with 303 to Mitt Romney’s 206. President Obama also won the popular vote taking 50% or 59,663,456 votes to Romney’s 48% or 57,003,614 votes.
