IDF Once Again Forced to Respond to Syrian Mortar Fire

IDF forces fired into Syria for a second time in as many days Monday after a mortar shell launched from Syrian territory landed in Israel.
The IDF confirmed they shot “at the source of the fire in Syria,” and scored a “direct hit,” taking out two mortar launchers, according to the Jerusalem Post.
The Syrian shell landed near an IDF outpost in Hazeka in the Golan. According to the Jerusalem Post Israel Army Radio reported that there were no injuries or damage.
The IDF released a response that read in part: “The IDF has filed a complaint with the UN forces operating in the area, stating that fire emanating from Syria into Israel will not be tolerated and shall be responded to with severity.”
On Sunday a mortar shell landed in Israel, prompting the IDF to fire a warning shot into Syria for the first time since the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
Ynet reported that Sunday’s incident drew a harsh response from Syrian rebels, who accused Israel of interfering on the Assad regime’s behalf. A report by Turkey’s Anadolu news Agency quoted a statement issued by the FSA saying that Sunday’s incident was aimed to help the Assad regime in his war against opposition forces.
