The battle for hearts and minds in Operation “Pillar of Defense” via social media has been well documented; but there is still the issue of old media, something Hamas has been using to great effect to spread their propaganda. But no more–or at least not as much. According to the AFP, Al-Aqsa television, the official station of Gaza’s Hamas regime, said in a statement that the Israeli army “is interfering with Al-Aqsa TV,” with the picture going on and off for several hours and sometimes appearing scrambled.
“We took over the Hamas television to broadcast warnings,” a military spokeswoman is quoted as saying. She indicated that the takeover would probably last for a number of hours.
AFP correspondents in Gaza said they could see no warning being sent out by the army, but a spokeswoman told Arutz Sheva that these claims were incorrect.
On Sunday, the army took over Hamas radio broadcasts in Gaza for several hours.
Algemeiner blogger Hadar Sela pointed out that ‘Al Aqsa TV’ “models itself on Hizballah’s ‘Al Manar’ TV station. It broadcasts virulently antisemitic material (so much so that it was taken off the air by the French government for violating European law against the broadcasting of incitement) and regularly promotes violenceagainst Israelis and Jews –including to children.”
The station is also designated by the United States treasury for Hamas ties.
Below is a clip of an Al-Aqsa TV broadcast where Hamas Cleric Muhsen Abu ‘Ita calls “The Annihilation of the Jews in Palestine..One of the Most Splendid Blessings for Palestine.”
