Canada’s Globe and Mail is reporting that despite Canada’s public support for Israel, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has voiced his displeasure with Israel’s recent announcement of E1 Jerusalem construction plans in a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The phone call took place on Saturday, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird told The Globe and Mail.
On Monday Canada refused to condemn Israel for its move which was opposed by the Palestinian Authority, despite criticism and protests from several Israeli allies. Baird’s office stuck to its line that “Unilateral actions on either side do not advance the peace process.”
Harper’s office wouldn’t initially comment on his conversation with Netanyahu, saying only that a tweet sent out on his official Twitter page would stand as an official comment. The tweet said: “Spoke today to Benjamin Netanyahu, who thanked Canada for its friendship and principled position this week at the UN.”
Canada was one of only nine countries to vote against the PA’s bid for upgraded status at the UN last week. An earlier report stated that Harper attempted to pressure the PA into dropping the bid.
