Benjamin Netanyahu met secretly with Jordanian officials, including King Abdullah, in Jordan to discuss recent events in Syria London-based Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported on Wednesday.
The paper did not specify when the meeting took place, only that it was “kept a secret.”
The paper quoted a Jordanian official as saying that the reason for the secrecy is that “Israel’s presence in any official meeting, regional or international, meant to change the balance of power in Syria, actually hinders such brainstorming.”
The paper also said that the possibility of the Syrian regime unleashing chemical weapons on civilians is “a matter of urgent concern” for several world powers, whose leaders have held intelligence meetings to discuss various response scenarios.
Al-Quds Al-Arabi’s report further said that Israel is trying to promote “an unpopular scenario” of a surprise offensive on Assad’s arsenal of chemical weapons, in order to destroy it.
This option has been dismissed by the West according to the report as being too much of a gamble, with thousands of innocent lives possibly being lost as a result.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has indicated that Syria has already unleashed chemical weapons on rebel fighters.
No Israeli source was willing to confirm the Al-Quds Al-Arabi report.
