An IDF unit that arrived in Jenin Tuesday to make an arrest was attacked by a mob of Palestinians, according to reports. The incident is indicative of a rising tide of violence in the territory. Security officials have noted an increase in clashes since November’s conflict between Israel and terror operatives in the Gaza Strip. They have recorded 122 Palestinian attacks on Israelis in the West Bank, compared with 39 in October, according to Ynet.
An elite army unit entered the city during the day to arrest a top terror operative thought to be plotting an attack. As the troops searched for the suspect, who ultimately was not apprehended, they were surrounded by some 500 Palestinians who charged at the unit, tossing firebombs and rocks.
The incident was brought under control by the unit, which had prepared for such an escalation, by means of crowd dispersal.
“The security forces are collaborating around the clock to maintain stability and will continue making efforts to thwart terrorism,” an army source told Ynet.
Earlier today the AFP published comments from a senior security official who claimed that due to increased activity in the West Bank and the fear of a third intifada, the IDF has increased arrests in the territory.
“There is a certain (Palestinian) awakening,” one source told AFP.
“As a consequence a decision was taken within the security establishment to increase intelligence activity and arrests among members of Hamas or operatives against Israel,” he added. “It started in the past few days and will increase.”
