Famed Orthodox Jewish boxer Yuri Foreman, won his first fight since March 2011 Wednesday night in a six-round shutout match against Brandon Baue at BB King’s Restaurant and Blues Club in Midtown Manhattan. His win came by unanimous decision from the judges, with a final score of 60-54.
Since his peak as WBA super welterweight champion, Foreman has fought and lost two matches, one against Miguel Cotto in June 2010, and the other against Pawel Wolak in March 2011.
As an observant Jew, Foreman studies the Talmud and Jewish mysticism. Rabbi DovBer Pinson, his teacher, describes him as “a very good student.”
“Most people (in his classes) who find out that he’s a boxer are very surprised. He doesn’t have that boxing personality, at least in the perception of what a boxer is. He’s not the rough kid on the block. He’s a sweet, easy-going kid,” Pinson says.
