A PLO delegation headed by senior official Zakaria al-Agha is scheduled to meet with the deputy foreign minister of Syria, Faysal al-Miqdad, in Damascus Monday to discuss means of keeping the Palestinian Arab refugee camps in Syria out of the ongoing fighting, the PLO envoy to Syria told the Ma’an News Agency.
The international community has mostly overlooked the plight of Palestinian Arabs in the country as fighting has intensified. Many Palestinian Arabs have fled Syria, or been internally displaced, as the fighting between the Syrian army and opposition forces spread into the camps.
Last week twelve Palestinian Arab refugees died due to heavy shelling operations in different areas of the Yarmouk refugee camp, South of the Syrian capital of Damascus.
According to sources, six of those killed were from one family, as their family home underwent heavy shelling.
“These deaths mark the end of a particularly tragic week for Palestine refugees in Syria, with an estimated total of 30 killed,” the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said in a news release.
In November, the PLO said that around 600 Palestinian Arabs had been killed in the Syrian conflict.
