Gary Johnson, a former University of Texas basketball player, is reportedly in stable condition after surgery to repair a skull fracture incurred during a basketball game in Israel on Tuesday. Johnson, who played four years at Texas from 2007-’11, plays for Hapoel Galil Elyon. He planned to return to the United States after Tuesday’s game.
Accounts of how Johnson received the injury differ. According to Christine Krzyzanowski of Two Affix, a Philadelphia-based marketing firm, Johnson incurred the injury when his head collided with a backboard. Kryzanowski is in contact with Johnson’s agent. But ESPN reports that Elitzur Ramla forward Johndre Jefferson hit Johnson in the head with his elbow. “Gary made a step-through move, and when he was going up I was close enough to block the shot and I blocked it on the backboard,” Jefferson told The Associated Press. “I don’t know how it happened, but when I was coming down my elbow caught him in the forehead.”
Johnson was put into a medically induced coma but has regained consciousness, the Israel Basketball Association said Wednesday. Johnson was awake and communicative, said IBA spokesman Hagai Segal. He is expected to make a full recovery.
