A Greek soccer player has been banned from the Greek national team for life for making a Nazi salute while celebrating a goal.
The Hellenic Football Federation announced Sunday that AEK Athens midfielder Giorgos Katidis‘s actions were “a profound insult to all victims of Nazi atrocities” and condemned it “unequivocally and categorically.”
The 20-year-old Katidis gave a Nazi salute after scoring the go-ahead goal Saturday in his team’s 2-1 victory over Veria in the Greek league. He pleaded ignorance of the meaning of his gesture, claiming on his Twitter account that he detests fascism.
“I abhor fascism. I would not have done it if I knew that it meant something. I know the consequences and would not do it ever.”
AEK have demanded an apology from the player and said the board would meet to decide his future.
